Scout Cyclist Activity Badge – Official Scouts UK Badge

The Scout Cyclist Activity Badge is an official Scouts UK badge that recognises cycling skills, bike care, route planning, and safe riding. It is designed for Scouts who want to build confidence on two wheels while developing practical maintenance skills and preparing for longer rides on road or off-road terrain. The badge is also listed by Scouts as supported by GO Outdoors.

To earn the badge, Scouts first complete two core requirements. They must use a bicycle that is properly equipped and keep it in good working order for at least six months. They must also show they can carry out essential maintenance, including checking and adjusting brakes, gear changes, seat and handlebar height, removing a wheel and repairing a puncture, checking a helmet, and maintaining a set of lights.

After that, Scouts choose one of three routes. For road cycling, they learn about riding in poor weather and low light, basic first aid, map reading, and complete an all-day cycle ride of at least 40 kilometres (25 miles), plus show either slalom control or understanding of the Highway Code, road signs, and helmet use. For off-road cycling, they cover the Mountain Bike Code of Conduct, control over different terrain, environmental awareness, outdoor first aid including hypothermia, map reading, and complete an all-day ride of at least 30 kilometres (20 miles). There is also an external qualifications route through the Gold Trix Award or a Level 3 Go-MTB Award from approved organisations.

This badge is a great fit for Scouts who enjoy active outdoor challenges, because it combines equipment care, safety awareness, navigation, and real ride experience. The official Scouts page also notes that the requirements can be adapted to suit each young person’s abilities, which makes it a flexible badge for a wide range of riders.
