Digital Maker Stage 1 Activity Badge (Raspberry Pi)

The Digital Maker Staged Activity Badge encourages Scouts to explore digital technologies, computing and creative problem-solving as part of the Skills for Life programme. The badge is structured in stages — Stage 1 being the first step in this digital journey.

This badge — created in partnership with the Raspberry Pi Foundation — helps young people develop confidence with digital tools and understand how computing and technology are used in everyday life.

🧠 How Scouts Earn Stage 1

To earn the Digital Maker Stage 1 Activity Badge, Scouts must:

🖥️ Understand Digital Technology

• Show that you know what a computer is and understand that technology is used in many different parts of everyday life.

• Think about where you see computer systems every day and how digital technology helps make things better, easier or more fun.

🎨 Creative Digital Activity

• Create a graphic for a computer game, app or website — such as a character, background or other visual.

🧾 Write Instructions

• Write clear instructions for a computer or a person to follow to complete a task — helping Scouts understand algorithms and sequencing.

Tips for leaders:
– Use tools like Scratch or simple drawing apps to help Scouts create their graphics.
– Instructions can be made using paper and craft materials if computers aren’t available.

These requirements can be adapted to suit the abilities of individual Scouts, making the badge flexible and inclusive.

🌐 Badge Progression & Skills Development

The Digital Maker Badge is a staged badge — meaning Scouts can continue to stages 2, 3, 4 and 5 to build further skills in coding, digital art, interactive projects and real-world digital solutions.
