Cub Scout Athletics Activity Badge – Requirements & Guide

The Athletics Activity Badge is all about energy, teamwork, and trying your best. Whether it’s sprinting, jumping, or even balancing in the egg-and-spoon race, this badge helps Cubs stay active, build confidence, and improve their personal fitness.

How to Earn the Athletics Badge

To achieve the badge, Cubs should complete the following activities with support from their Leader, Young Leader, or a suitable adult.

1. Warm Up and Cool Down

  • Take part in a proper warm up and warm down routine that uses all the main muscle groups.

  • Suggested exercises include skipping, jogging on the spot, stretching arms overhead, bending knees, rolling the head slowly, and tensing/relaxing shoulders.

2. Clothing and Safety

  • Explain the best clothes to wear for athletics, such as lightweight sports kit, trainers, and weather-appropriate layers.

  • Show you understand how to stay safe while exercising (hydration, using the right equipment, and warming up/cooling down).

3. Throwing Activities

Choose one of the following:

  • Throw a tennis or cricket ball as far as possible (try both an overarm and underarm throw).

  • Throw three beanbags into a bucket, increasing the distance each time.

  • Throw a football (or similar) as far as you can – once using a chest push and once using an overhead throw.

4. Running Activities

Take part in two of these:

  • Shuttle run (6 x 10m)

  • 50m skipping with a rope

  • 50m sprint

  • 25m sack race

  • 25m egg and spoon race

  • 400m run

5. Team Activities

Take part in one of these:

  • 4 x 100m relay

  • Team assault course

  • Assisted blindfold race

6. Jumping Activities

Choose one of the following:

  • Standing jump

  • Sargent jump

  • High jump (with proper mats and supervision – no Fosbury Flop unless taught by an expert)

  • Long jump

Top Tips for Success

  • Your Leader will award you the badge for taking part and trying your best – it’s not about winning.

  • You could complete this badge during a Pack or District sports day, as long as the listed activities are included.

  • Always focus on safety and fun while improving your fitness.

✅ Earning the Cub Scout Athletics Activity Badge is a brilliant way to get active, develop new skills, and enjoy friendly competition with your Pack!
